7-8:30 pm Thursday, August 29 Saving the Dark

Dinosaur National Monument and Steinaker State Park, both recently certified as Dark Sky Parks, are pleased to co-present the documentary Saving the Dark as part of the Dark Skies Over Dinosaur astronomy festival. 80% of the world’s population live under light polluted skies. What do we lose when we lose sight of the stars? Excessive and improper lighting robs us of our night skies, disrupts our sleep patterns and endangers nocturnal habitats. Saving the Dark explores the need to preserve night skies and ways to combat light pollution.

Immediately following the film, there will be a short walk around downtown Vernal to observe dark sky quality and compare different styles of outdoor lighting. Then see for yourself how the view of the sky changes when you travel away from brighter lights. From 9:00 to 10:30 pm, join several astronomers at Steinaker State Park for Stargazing with Telescopes. There is a $4 per car charge at Steinaker State Park.
